I don't know about "prestigious", but it's been around for quite a while. The World Wide Web started around 1995 or so, and pretty much everything was text-based before that on the Internet. However, ICC already gave the opportunity to play with a graphics interface, which was highly unusual. It was great to play people from the other side of the world, particularly when most people had not even heard of the Internet! I started playing on ICC in the late eighties, and that was the only graphic interface I used on the Net. Several years later, they started charging to play. That's when the FICS was created, and those of us too poor, cheap or stubborn to pay ICC moved to FICS.
