Why is zzzzz's rating standing still after a game like this one:

Yes, I've seen the special rule, and I'm almost certain that this was discussed before (but there's no forum search feature so here it is again).. If I beat up someone who has 400+ points more than I do, what does that mean?? I won, he lost, I get some rating points, he should loose some.
As far as I can see, zzzzz played a good game here, and got nothing for it..
Why does this special rule exist?? It makes no sense..

Because it is very unlikely that a player ratied in the 1400s beats an opponent in the 2300s. If the system gives the 1400 player a good rating push we are back into the rating inflation land.
The problem on that game is that either the 1400 player is under rated or the 2300 player is overrated. The system has no way to know which, so it assumes that changing ratings will make matters worse.

Very unlikely, but still possible. I don't think it really matters whether 1400 player is underrated or th 2300 is overrated, their ratings should still change.. After all, a 1400 player deserves some reward for beating a 2300 player, and the latter should be punished severely.. >:-(
Even if a 1400 player wins "by accident" (though I can really imagine somthing like that in chess), he will most like loose tons of other games agains such opponents and his rating WILL go down, at a good pace too..
This way, I'm not really motivated to play against stronger opponents, only against those that should be at the same level and that's not always a challenge..

Lecterror: Please, take note that zzzzz has a provisional rating so the situation you are referring to is also a provisional situation, i.e., the same game with zzzzz with DEFINITE rating (without he p in his rating, see please the profile of zzzzz) would have caused the change of rating you would like (as far as I understand the matter).
BUT, the same thing can not happen with provisional ratings due to the inflacyion problem just worked out by Miguel (and very deeply discussed in the forums).
So, in fact, you are motivated indeed to play against stronger opponents if you have completed 26 games in QA.
Manuel.
