There is also Playchess.com and FICS (freechess.org). You can visit each site to see which one you like best, but ICC and Playchess seem to have the most members and features. FICS, my personal choice, is totally free of charge.

I belonged to ICC for years (text Internet, pre-World Wide Web), but then they started charging. FICS is a good site for "live" play.

I played on ICC last year, was pretty good, but like they said, they charge. Other than that it had lessons from Grandmasters, tournaments almost all the time, games from grandmasters (though with a bit of time lag lol), and of course many styles of games (blitz, regular, losers, bughouse, atomic, etc).

I play online at FICS and I love it!:)

Little has changed since I posted reviews of online playing sites two years ago at http://www.angelfire.com/poetry/wulebgr/reviews.htm

Changes that I have noted include:
It seems that the folks that run USCL have purchased ICC, and are now offering the USCL interface as an option, and have eliminated guest logins. The USCL interface has a problem in its autosave of games in pgn format: draws are saved as without result. Aside from that, it's a nice interface.

I play at FICS because I'm a blitz junkie, not because I enjoy it. The infernal lag has become awful in the past six months or so. I find that an opponent's lag in a 3 0 game can disrupt my concentration. In fairness to FICS, however, USCL and playchess also seem to have a growing problem with lag.

For watching GM games, such as Kramnik's defense of his title or the Wijk aan Zee tournament in January, nothing compares to Yasser Seirawan's commentary on playchess. In addition, the playchess interface (Fritz, etc.) accomodates teaching and commentary far better than the others.
