I play on Kurnik.org and Fics for the very best, playing conditions Kurnik in my opinion is better no lag and I've never played anyone on Kurnik who trash talks like the guests on Fics the regular members are ok but stay away from the guest they are very grouchy people.

Wulebgr: "infernal lag"? I only have problems with that when I'm sharing connection with people using eMule, Torrent etc... I've played agains very few lagger players... and as I play most of my games in tournaments, there's no problem at all: laggers are not allowed to play: they can be forteited. I don't have any single bad word to FICS =]

delphifire,
I tried Kurnik.org per your recommendation. I cannot see the appeal of these yahoo-type sites. How are they comparable to FICS and the pay servers?
Have you looked at http://www.edcollins.com/chess/yahoo-vs-servers.htm?
andreavb,
I've experienced problems with lag in FICS tournaments. Don't get me wrong, for a free site it is terrific. But, it seems, the lag has grown as a problem (perhaps due to more people playing). My threshhold for tolerance of lag may be lower than yours. Most opponents seem to lag 10-15 seconds in a 3 0 game, while only a few (1 in 20) reach 1-2 minutes. When I played on ICC, it was possible to prevent opponents whose lag was greater than a certain amount; FICS does not have this feature implemented.
