I'm brand new here and have just joined a tournament. I'm just wondering how they work as in: Do I have to initiate the games or is it automatic?

It is automatic.

Nerdling, the games are automatically started when the tournament gets 20 players(if it's an auto-open), 12 players(if it's auto beg, int, adv, master or elite) or, if it's an user's tournament, it starts when the director decides.
Don't worry, the games will appear on your games page, and you'll be emailed about it.

It normally takes less than a day for a new tournament to start.
