I just won a game against dnptrs but my rating barely moved :-( while he only lost a rating point... I know I am a 1800+ hacker but I just beat a guy that I never dreamed of beating... Was there a mistake in the post-rating calculations?

I also earned few points against Catalonian when I beat him in the same tournament. Is there a problem with the ratings calculations?

The calculations for your side are correct, you won 30 points after this match.

This is calculated as follows:

max(2287-1848,350) = 350

new_rating = old_rating + 0.04 * 350 + 16 = 1848 + 14 + 16 = 1878

Now dnptrs losing only one point looks wrong and I will investigate the implementation of the algorithm, even though at first glance I couldn't spot any obvious problems in the computation.

Ok, I think I fixed the problem now. There was a calculation error that only appeared (you guessed) when the winner had a lower rating than the loser.

I recomputed all the ratings again with the corrected algorithm, so you may notice a small difference in your rating.

So in the Alopinto vs. dnptrs game now the rating change is as follows:

Alopinto (winner): from 1849 to 1879 (+30 points)
dnptrs (loser): from 2275 to 2252 (-23 points)

Miguel, you must see my rating also. Because i've 30 points more than yesterday at night and this night i'm was sleeping, sure. :-)

After I made this correction to the rating calculation algorithm I computed the ratings of all the games for all the players again. Since this bug affected several players (although not as evidently as in the Alopinto vs. dnptrs game) the ratings of all the players may have changed as well.

I would like to bring up to your attention that if the ratings are calculated with the current rating at the end of a match then this is wrong altogether. The changes in ratings are calculated with the ratings at the beginning of the match otherwise we all would wait until our opponents win rating points before resigning or winning.

It doesn't make sense, for example, that I started playing Ruben who had a rating of 2879 at the beginning of our game while I had 1234. During the course of the game Ruben lost 1879 points leaving him with a rating of 1000 at the end of our game while I gained 1000 points to end up with a rating of 2234... Is it realistic to calculate my gain of rating based upon the ratings of Ruben 1000 and Alopinto of 2234? I don't think so...

This is a very tricky issue and I am sorry I brought it up but it is only intended as constructive criticism. In fact, if I had to start over again and be given a rating of zero I wouldn't stop playing here because I genuinely love the website...

Happy new year to all of you!
