The history of chess goes back at least 1,400 years, where the game originated in India and Persia. Chess hasn’t changed much over the years. In fact, the last rule change was about 500 years ago. The first American chess tournament was held in New York in 1843.

My understanding is that en passant wasn't accepted world-wide until the 19th Century.

One must be very careful about such references. Often, what has happened is that the original source just refers to some kind of strategic board game and the translator writes `chess' because it gives a reasonable impression of what was going on in a single word or because s/he thinks that the game sounds like chess. (Imagine an author a thousand years from now deciding that Roman references to `chariots' must mean `cars' because cars have been around practically forever and there isn't any other sort of wheeled vehicle.)

I heard something about a Chinese person way back in the day that used to play with pieces that were meant for war magick. And they got the idea for a game out of it, another source say's it was invented in India.
