While browsing the forums today, I noticed that the `Chess Discussion' forum was marked as having new messages but none of the threads within it (on any of the twelve pages) were marked.

Maybe.... someone post a new topic then delete it thats why the forum was marked.... just maybe 
|

Aha -- that's probably the cause. I've just created and deleted a message in `Chess Articles' and that forum is now also marked as containing new messages without any of the threads having new messages in them.
