Is the use of endgame tablebases allowed on QueenAlice? I doubt it is, but I would like to clarify anyway.

If it is to be allowed, I suggest that miguel makes the tablebases available on this website to all members. I don't believe that miguel has made a decision on tablebases yet.

Effectively a tablebase would provide perfect play for both sides in all 6-piece and under endgames, so unlike the opening explorer (which does not have a decisive effect on the final result of the game), I don't think tablebases should be allowed.

Maybe Miguel should be more clear about this in the Your Responsibilities as a Player section of the About This Site page.

It would depend on how the tablebases are used. A tablebase could be provided that shows the position labled as a win or a draw, but does not show what the correct next move is. That would give players some knowledge, but not allow for perfect play. The simplist thing would be to not provide or allow tablebases to be used.

Even if the tablebase did not show the correct next move, it must still be disallowed. From the rules: "You cannot use a computer or computer program to evaluate or analyze a game."

Providing the win/draw/loss information would be an evaluation :-P

But in the about page you can also read "It is also allowed to consult chess books and opening databases." And, in fact, most of the information contained in a chess book or in an opening database it is also an evaluation (they tell you the best line of play or, even, they finished with an evaluation like +- ...and so on)

I am in favour of using endgame tablebases because, between other things, it is almost impossible to accurately know if a player is playing with the use of such endgames databases or not...this is not the same as using Fritz to choose your move....

But it is a diffucult matter, I know,... :-)
