I lost the game and lost seven rating points; but my opponent only gained five. Yet the rating formulae given on the about page are symmetrical: assuming both players have established ratings, the total of their ratings should not change. Just before I resigned, my opponent was rated 223 points higher than me. So he should have gained
0.04 x (-223) + 16 = 7.08 points (not five)
and I should have gained
0.04 x 223 - 16 = -7.08 points (as happened)
Note that rounding errors cannot explain a difference of two points. It's also not the case that my rating was calculated first and then my opponents rating calculated with this new rating difference -- that would still give him 6.8 points.

No, ratings grow slower if you are above 2100. That's one of the cases that fall under the "There are a few special cases and exceptions that are used when the ratings of the players meet certain conditions" statement. See the USChess page for more information.

Ok -- fair enough. Thanks for the prompt explanation!
Maybe the about page could mention that ``Ratings over 2100 change a little more slowly''? (I appreciate that the full details of this are too fiddly to bother putting on the About page.)

Sorry to butt in, but can someone explain how you transfer from a provisional to an established rating?
Best wishes,

Thanks.
Oh well, that will take me quite a long time!
Never mind.
