he deserves no respect, I agree with bishop.
Fischer was at the height of power, and being the selfish person he is, he kept all his great ideas to himself.
how many books did fischer write about his ideas????? none......
I like fischers' games, but, just because he "was" a great chess player, he is "still" an embarrassment and selfish chess player.

Bobby Fischer was a great player, multidimensional in his playing skills, but one-dimensional in his life. Chess grew incredibly in popularity in the USA in 1972, completely because we had a world champion! We owe him gratitude for that, and respect for his playing skills. However, since 1972 he has, indeed, been an embarrassment. I don't hate him for it; I feel sorry for him. The guy couldn't handle the fame, etc. OTOH, I've never had the opportunity to face that type of fame (or much fame at all, actually!), so I don't know how I would respond. Forget about conquering the world...I'd just like to beat alib2004 once!

A lot of people say that Robert James Bobby Fischer is/was an embarrassment for chess. I disagree. A bad chess player is an embarrassment for chess, not Bobby Fischer. It is also said that he was very selfish. And who isn't?? I think Fischer did what many of us would have done in his place. And I do not believe that anyone who likes to win (and does it) is not selfish. And that IS NOT a bad thing. If I would have met Bobby Fischer I would neither spit in his face nor bow to him. I would shake his hand and move on. I don't feel sorry for him and i don't hate him either. We do not owe anything to Fischer, AND neither does he to us.
