My first chess book was "Chess in a Nutshell", by Fred Reinfeld in the 1960s. My dad bought me a checkers set and taught me how to play (he was quite good at checkers). The set he bought included chess pieces along with the checkers. He didn't know how to play chess, so I bought the book from the paperback section of a local drugstore and taught myself.

I'm ashamed to say it was something like "How to Play the Game of Chess" byt the much-maligned Fred Reinfeld. About 1972, and the effects still show... :-(O)
