MY FIRST CHESSBOOK WAS " TRATADO ELEMENTAL DE APERTURAS" BY P.A ROMANOWKY (TRADUCCION DEL RUSO)
It was by Harry Golombek, called something exciting like `The Game of Chess'.

It was a Paul Keres book that got me into chess, Though I did not understand a thing as I was in grade school then. But my first chess books were by Fred Reinfeld, "First Book of Chess" and "Chess: Attack and Counterattack". The first one had an inset chessboard complete with chess pieces that are inserted in the slot(square).

For those of you who don't speak Spanish too well, Chess is Completely Cursed by Kasparov tells the story of Karpov's struggle to cope with life as an ex-champion. Kasparov himself wrote two further volumes in the same series, Ajedrez Curso Completo by FIDE (1994) and Ajedrez Curso Completo by Kramnik (2001).
