My first chess book was "Manual de Xadrez" Idel Beker.. ganhei quando eu tinha uns 10 anos de idade... ele ainda existe (meio velinho) mas está comigo firme e forte.

Not a good choice, I think. Beginners' games are decided by simple tactics; knowing move fifteen or even twenty five of the Smyslov Variation of the Ruy Lopez really doesn't become important for a long time.

Didnt say it was the best book to read, just my first :-). I would recommend something like "My System" for someone who already knows the basics, not MCO.

My first chess book was Gerald Abrahams chess for begginers, My second The Golden Dozen by Irving Chernev. and the rest is history ,as they say.!
