Hey there, I tried to compile my opinion on the things I read about here. Just my personal experience. :)

(talking about postal. OTB is different someways)
* It's rude to ask the opponent to resign. If one asks me(never happened at QA), I'm pretty sure I will ignore and last longer at my moves, just to get him angry. And, of course, I wouldn't match him again, neither accept a challenge. I don't need this kind of people...
* I usually resign lost games, but only if my opponent uses to play quickly and if he is really stronger than me. If my opponent always uses his 7 days, I'll wait, since he can lose on time. If he plays worse than me, I won't resign, since he can give my pieces back.
* As I use to resign real-lost games, if my opponent asks me to resign I'll take this as "he wants a faster win", or "he's not really sure about HOW to win, although it's likely he WILL win someday". So, if you're playing me and you think you'll win, just do that on the table. :)

* I usually get upset when a player uses his whole time to move. But I need to keep in mind that if I join a 7d/m game, there's absolutely no problem on lasting 7d/m... so, nothing to care about. If I want faster games, I'll join faster games.
* The 50 games rule is an each player's matter. I won't give up one of my four games just because my opponent has 50 games going on. If he has some issue on this, it's better him to resign or speed up some of his games. I don't have anything to do with it...

It's adding insult to injury when you ask somebody to resign in a hopeless game.

Well Razoman, my question in the two cases I thought that the games were dragged on and on, on purpose was not exactly "Can you resign please, as your situation is hopeless". It was more like "Can you explain to me, why you keep on continue playing this game?" And I am confinced, both of them are players (1800 up) who know exactly what they are doing. I would never make a remark to any player of which I have any doubt that they do not understand the ethics of the game, neither to players who make their moves regularly.

What I usually do is to promote my pawns to queens before making a mate. It drags but it maintains the ethics of this gentleman's game. While it is impolite not to resign a hopeless game, it is rude to ask someone to resign regardless of the circumstances.

Politeness and ethics have nothing to do with the resigning problem. What they are trying to do is delay games that are going poorly for them,in the hopes that they can finish games that are going well.so as not to loose rating points.
