I would like to see players who deflate their rating by continually losing games by "time expired" be banned from tournaments. Two losses of this type in the last previous two months, for instance.

I agree! I already had more than three games with players who had this attitude! Game every day and I get frustrated with these players! IF YOU DO NOT WANT PLAY DOES NOT COME!

I agree too.

Some chess programs have a position evaluation tool. True, this is based on chess theory, not brilliant combinations or other twists of fate (like outright blunders!). However, if QA had such a tool built in, it might prompt certain players to stop fooling themselves and resign.

I would guess the reason for this request would be to partly prevent players that are higher rated from playing in tournaments that they are too strong for normally. Is that correct?

If so, maybe a feature could be added to check the highest rating in the past month or so and if it was more than some set amount of points higher then you would only be eligible for tournaments equal to that higher rating. Still could be gamed a bit but would prevent some deflation in order to win lower rated tournaments.

If the rationale is just to prevent people from starting and not finishing tournaments then the method described, banning from tournaments for a set amount of time if there are too many time defaults, would be a good way to do it.

I do assume that most players will not willingly drop their ratings just to get in a tournament. That's what the open tournaments are for. I have seen many players who just don't seem to react until the last moment, or even go overtime in tournaments. In a challenge game, I assume that something came up, so if my opponent is not at a dead loss, I'm patient. In tournaments, there is a commitment to the other combatants as well, so there is less of a problem in claiming two days after the move reminder has been sent.

Maybe reduce the time (no login,no move...nothing...) to less than 15 days in tournaments will be a good thing...In my (and other) case ,a game between two non-playing guys is going to be deleted after ~30days on 37.Miraculously, one login, one move, and we are waiting again for ~35days/37.... :-P ...because he didn't claim the game.... :^-( .......sniff........and he didn't login since april 28. ......and we are waiting.......still........again.........and again.............. HEEEEEELLLLLPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /:-( :^-( /:-( :^-(................ ?:-(
