My apologies, I assumed you'd be using sms's due to your first sentence "Opponent writes moves". By the way, it's pretty impressive to play "spoken chess" (much like being blindfolded), so my compliments! I've tried it before but I can only go about 6-7 moves (12-14 halfmoves) deep before losing the mental image of the chessboard. How far down can you go? And doesn't that distract you even more from driving than playing on a tiny chessboard (having the chance to at least look at the board instead of visualizing it in your head). Playing spoken chess takes me up so much mental activity I can barely avoid walking into posts, let alone drive!

I meant that my opponent records the game in pen or pencil on paper. That provides a written record incase there is a doubt what was played. Typically my opponent is at home using a chess set. I just bought a prius. I cant play chess and ride my motorcycle at the same time.

It's still pretty impressive... so how far deep can you visualize the game?

I have played complete games (more than 30 moves) on many occasions. I once tried to play 2 games of mental chess and one game of normal over the board chess at the same time. A USCF expert 2000 - 2200 was also playing without using a set. He became inpatient and offered a draw after about 18 moves in a roughly equal position. My most recent game was against an 11 year old USCF 1950. He hung a piece. I did not notice it until he left it ungaurded for 2 consecutive moves.
My USCF rating is 1803.
My opening strategy is to play a slightly inferior opening that is flexible for nearly all replies. It is easy for black to equalize by selecting a move that I have seen hundreds of times. My familiarity with the position helps me when playing without a set.
I still hope to find an opponent with a US phone number.
