Hi,

I noticed today ( 12th Nov ) that my rating has gone up 7 points overnight even though I haven't won a game.

Looking back at previous completed games the ratings for me and my opponent have also changed ( Weirdly, I like to note down my rating and that of my opponent )

It shows up in the most recent games, and older ones too eg In my game against Moreysek I noted that he was 2136, and I went from 1916->1925
whereas the game (http://www.queenalice.com/game.php?id=959859)now says that he was 2145 and I went from 1923->1932.

Any ideas why?
Cheers
Mick..

Only a guess but probably lots of players had slight ratings changes if there was a major correction to several players' ratings progression. For example this one:

You may have been the only one that noticed the minor change! ?:-(

I noticed mine had gone up 8 points. Figured it was some kind of correction. About 6 years ago we had a correction of several hundred points - I think I lost about 400 points! Some nitwits left the site when their rating actually went down to where it should have been in the first place. Personally, while it was fun to be that high, I was kind of sheepish about telling anyone, since I knew I wasn't that good. A correction of just several points doesn't seem too bad.

I was hoping Miguel might look in and comment...

I was more interested in why all(?) the ratings might have to be adjusted, and not really concerned that mine had moved a few.

Well, my rating seems to have been following the rules lately. My opponent, with a 'p' rating, beat me and was awarded eighty-five points for that (the maximum the system would allow for would be a 32 point raise or drop, at 399 difference in rating).

In our next game, the same opponent remarked that his rating had jumped up four points for no reason. So something, somewhere needs to be fixed!

Note how many undeserved points I got back in 2008! No worries, I've lost those extra ones two times over by now...

Provisional ratings can, as your game demonstrates, change by much more than 32 points at a time. As a provisional player, you score your opponent's rating for a draw, opponent+400 for a win and opponent-400 for a loss. Your rating is the average score for all your games. Once you've completed 25 rated games, the regular formula kicks in.

It looks like everyone's rating has been adjusted a little. I fancy mine has gone up a little. I'd like to think that's because a long-standing bug in the provisional rating system has been fixed and all the games re-rated but we won't know unless Miguel comments.

Dave.
