You are correct, Phys. Sorry I did not think to provide some background.

I would not have named ppeteleco unless it was obvious. He is by far the most obvious case I've ever seen. He has been on my "removed names" list (link on my page) for a long time. There I've only listed the accounts I saw at the time but it seems that he will create as many as he needs and may have quite a few more by now. The original ones included: Dante2000, gordovc, cex, cutucapeao, navegadorbrasil and timbalada (send any more you notice).

Again, the only reason he is so obvious is because he didn't try to hide it and had a great old time winning Open tourneys faster than anyone has in the history of Queen Alice. %-)

As for two accounts creating a pattern ... only if someone is looking for it but when it is 5 or 10 or more accounts, the pattern is much harder to detect without additional tournament and game evidence.

As for a program that can detect a player by playing style, I'd say that would be quite a challenge even for a strong A.I. using quantum computing ... we'll have to wait a while! ;-)

I must remember what my primary purpose for playing here is. I want to get better at over the board chess and I enjoy playing chess. I do enjoy winning tournaments. this form of cheating reduces my chances. However each game has its own merit. It helps me improve and I enjoy chess. this form of cheating cant interfer with my most fundamental reasons for playing here.

Here are four players in an 'Auto Open' group: 'A' (1100p); 'B' (1350); 'C' (1100) and, 'D' (2000). Players C and D are the same person. A plays D, gets thrashed, learns nothing, only how to lose quickly. A plays B, puts up a spirited defence. Loses, but enjoyed the game and learned to be on guard against the dreaded 'knight fork'. He then plays against C and thinks,'I should do well here because he is the same rating as me and I did well against B'. Oh, dear! Gets another thrashing - his second lesson in how to lose quickly. He switches off his computer, thinking, 'Is this chess site really for me?' With due respect Phys, to say 'each game has its own merit' is completely at odds with the notion of this being a 'friendly club'.

Equus,

We all agree that you have identified a valid problem. But what to do? Blutigeroo has offered valid criticism on why ideas to combat this problem are not likely to work. What do you think we should do? Maybe the best thing I can do is iggnore the problem.

In the example you mention our evil double username guy has also managed to have a grossly inacurate rating. Mr. A from is a victim of double username guy having an inaccurate rating.

Blutigeroo wrote about mr double username exploiting the tendency of more draws at high levels. I would think that both his usernames would have high ratings.

As you say there are the cheats who don't even bother to cover their tracks. For example, there's Alvo-Dumbledore and Leonardompaula89 who has (yes, singular) been ramping up his ratings for ages. It's so funny my sides ache!
