I used to play on the big three sites: GameKnot, RedHotPawn and Letsplaychess. I once payed a year's subscription at GameKnot and love their competition features. However, I was one of those who got banned from the site for no good reason. RedHotPawn's community is unfriendly and reminds me of Usenet, while Letsplaychess hardly offers anything for free players.

I'm now trying 4 sites to find the best free site. Besides QueenAlice, I'm also checking out ChessHere, ChessManiac and SlowChess. SlowChess is really slow, while ChessManiac suffers from a cluttered interface and unfriendly community. So it's either QueenAlice or ChessHere for me. I think QueenAlice is wonderful - however, it lacks the type of competitions I used to play at GameKnot. If QueenAlice offered more types of competitions, such as teams, leagues, and mini-tournaments, I'd definitely choose it over ChessHere.

I've been on chessmaniacs for a few months now. There MAY be a bit of a jackass element there, talking politics and making rude public comments, but only occasionally. Maybe it is because of the live chat feature, but I have met many courteous and reliable oppponents there too. Their interface IS somewhat cluttered but their analysis boards DO work, unlike some! Chess-knights also has a friendly community but has suffered a bit lately because of many (perhaps necessary) changes to the site and going from .net to .com. My team-mates on chess-knights and I all form a nice tight-knit group and there private intra-team chat function is helpful there.
There is no question Queen Alice is the best overall site: friendly players, low number of timed out games, GREAT graphics and run efficiently. Also, fastest and clearest analysis boards I've yet seen and the most "professional" and gentlemanly players! Kudos to Miguel!

Nobody can beat QA's Think feature coupled with the opening browser. I agree with all Popcorn's statetement.

http://www.instantchess.com/ I played a few games here, although you can play REALTIME for free, I don't think you have any control/choice who to play against other than what the applet would randomly assign you to.

It's kinda nice because it's realtime, but of course you can't use all its features unless you're willing to pay for it.

Any inputs?
