I have fairly recently joined & am dismayed that I have lost several of my games with opponents claiming a win on time.
I know it is my responsibility to play my moves in time but I am obviously not good at this. A couple of times I have had a reminder email sent to me to play & that has helped me to log on & play. However, sadly some of my opponents seem to just give up with me & claim the win (possibly because I was in a good position?).Perhaps winning is more important than playing to them?Although I do realise it can be frustrating if the opponent doesn't play that regularly.
Maybe I should accept only 7 day time limit games,to give me enough time to check for & play moves? Is it possible to set my details to only accept 7 day games?
Possibly it is I am not used to playing games here and I hope I can learn to do better.
Any constructive suggestions to help me with this I am grateful for. Thanks and let's enjoy the chess/games!

Dear brM,
Go to Preferences/Other Options, and check the options you like.
I like very much 14 days/move, because I can play as fast as I want, and still I can wait some days, no need to take a vacation.
But dont choose this if you really want to play ALL moves with 14 days spent, and yet risc to lose by time anyway. That will be annoying!
Cheers and good games, Beco.
PS. BTW, another good option in your case is to be warned by e-mail. Go to Preferences/Email options, and check "it is my turn to move".

Yes, brM, it's possible: on your preferences, "other options", you can check the time controls you want to play.
Anyway, they're right on claiming: if you don't want to lose games on time, just play longer games. The idea behind fast games is to be fast, isn't it?
Cheers, andreavb

I suggest you play games with slower time limits, especially if you are playing many games simultaneously. I always play 7-days-per-move games.
I suggest QueenAlice automatically send a reminder e-mail when you have less than 24 hours to move in a game.

I also have a game where my opponent hasn't played a move within the time limit. Will the board automatically give me the right to claim the game? Or, to the point, *when* will the board give me that right?

For non-tournament games with less than 2 full moves the option to claim will not be displayed, your only option is to delete the game.
