Theres this system called the "white lion" which I am very fond of. Of course I do a modified version of it to save time + not commit a queen to c2 too early (I prefer at d1 anyway's to make the d3-d4 break more potent)
1.d3 (Nf3) 2.Nf3 (d3) 3.Nbd2 4.c3 5.e4 6.h3 7.g4 and optional is 8.Nf1 9. Ng3 as that is not allway's effective, and it doesnt have to be systematic in THAT particular order (EG: 5...d(f)xe4 6.Nxe4 (or 6.dxe4 depending on the position)I also use this system as black.

Superdad,
I play the KIA as well and I agree with you that it can be a bit passive. The Reti Opening may be an alternative which has similar initial opening moves but creates set ups that are likely unfamilar to many black players. I do not currently use it but plan to learn it myself.

I also wish to overhaul my opening repertoire, and I've been looking at the English Opening. What do you think of it?

To Philador -- I can find the Lion thru googling (at least the black lion), and so might investigate that a bit. Looks sort-of Indianish.
To aknightout -- haven't seen a book on the Reti opening. Amazon recommends one by Everyman Chess, but one reviewer disses it (most like it) for failing to show certain common lines. Might go for it anyways.
To whitekings -- I bought, then returned, an Everyman Chess book on the english. Nothing against the english, except that it is very analyzed, and transforms into so many things (such as QGD). The opening is also regarded as subtle rather than as attacking. I already have subtle and not attacking in KIA, and am finding it not quite my style. So it is a style issue, rather than adequacy, for me. If there were a serious practicioner of the English on QA then he/she would probably clean up the opposition! I'm of the current, fleeting, opinion that I ought to examine the Reti for a bit, but would likely just try to master some form of an open e4 opening. Some recent (grand|international|something)master said that modern players don't know how to defend very well. That pegs me, I guess, as I acknowledge wanting to shy away from positional openings and go into attacking ones.

Superdad,
I have a copy of Cadogan's "Easy Guide to the Reti Opening" by Angus Dunnington. He also wrote "The Ultimate King's Indian Attack". My recommendation to you is don't drop the KIA. Expand with the Reti and you can use either/or.
