To aknightout: I see Amazon listing the Dunnington book at > $40 US. Is it really that expensive?

Superdad, I'm a positional player. If your only reason for not wanting to play the English is that you are an attacking player, do you think the English would be suitable for me?

I've only read about the English -- not played it. There is a nice Everyman Chess book on the opening. I looked to Amazon for a review. People liked the book, but one review made me realize that the opening transposes to very many things. MCO says that 1 c4 is the 3rd/4th most common opening move, so it is certainly generally popular. My opinion is that the opening is worth a look if you are happy with, and skilled with, positional play -- when moving a rook one square is all the difference in the world. Myself? Too many variations to consider at this time for me.

After evaluation, I believe I'll keep what I've got. Don't really want to learn the QP openings. Will use the KIA and those 1.e4 openings I know "a little of". For me, I guess I don't have an all-purpose opening. Sorry, Philador, but I don't think I'll be playing the Lion any time soon...except when you play me, hmmm?

The dynamic reti by nigel davies is also good and perhaps easier to understand. It is <20.00.
