My System for the 21st century which is an update of Nimzovich's book should be great for you. "The art of positional chess" from Gambit Publications should be of use to you too, Fritz Technique trainer's 1 & 2 and any technique book should help you, don't forget books on pawn structure, open lines, and piece play. Tactical books and disc will help you out alot too, the books mentioned here are far too basic to be of any use. Kotov's "Think like a Grandmaster" and "Play like a Grandmaster" are other highly recommended books.

As far as I'm aware, the only `updating' is that this is a new translation from the original German and extra diagrams have been added. The actual material itself is as Nimzowitsch wrote it.

Personally, I find Yasser Seirawan's introduction to the book rather annoying. He complains that the original edition was `too European'. Of course it's European! It was written in Europe, by a European! What's wrong with that?

Also, I think the typesetting of the new version is nasty (margins much too small; ugly sans serif font). Nonetheless, the book itself is excellent.

Kotov's "Think like a Grandmaster"

Nigel Short has referred to this as `Drink Like a Grandmaster'. I don't think he's too impressed but I may have got the wrong end of the stick.

I totally agree with what you said about the 21st Century edition of My System. The small margins and Arial font drive me crazy. Quality Chess is coming out with a new translation of My System which is supposed to be totally complete (I think the extra material is just criticisms of other players, especially Tarrasch). Those interested can check out the .pdf sample here:

Maybe they'll do the same for Chess Praxis.

Actually, Chernev is one of my favorite writers. ;-)

I tried checking out the new version of My System on both Amazon and Barns and Noble, and they both say it's unavailable. Any idea what's up?
