Actually, free e-mail users are not welcome. It's a security issue, to avoid users havng multiple accounts. Any special cases can be discussed with admins $ showadmin $ tell <nickname> <yourquestion>

whitekings, how do they know you're a gmail user? And how do they react to it to let you know you're not welcome?

To register with FICS, you have to supply an E-mail address. They won't accept addresses at free E-mail providers because that makes it too easy to obtain multiple accounts, which is a violation of FICS rules.
So, if your only E-mail address is with a free E-mail provider, you can't register an account with FICS. You can still play as an unregistered user, which lets you do almost everything you can do as a registered user, except you can't get a rating.

OK, thanks, richerby; I had wondered if that might be it. I joined too long ago to remember the details.
