Gmail's invite-only, and I know many computer-literate users who use only Gmail.

And I know several people who have more than one Gmail account.
But there's little point arguing about FICS policy here. Anyone who feels that an exception should be made for them could always try contacting the FICS admins in a non-confrontational way and see what happens.

Correction. You cannot use a free E-mail address to register with FICS via the web form at
http://www.freechess.org/cgi-bin/Register/FICS_register.cgi
However, if you have no E-mail address that can be used on that form, you can still register by talking to an admin online. To do this, log in as guest, use the `showadmin' command to get a list of admins currently online and then use a command like `tell ADMIN_NAME ...' to talk.

I sometimes go www.freechess.org or www.pogo.com Pogo.com is much less serious chess, and an easier interface to use
