I conclude that is is best to use as few days and to take them as late as possible. Obviously if youre taking a vacation on the moon where you and your fellow LUNAtics wont have internet than you must take vacation before you go. But If you are going to be gone for 5 days and your time wont expire till yiou get back then you should take vacation days as needed when you return.

I protect myself from being the victum of obscene vacation use by saving my vacation days. My opponent can extend the game but I can equal his trick if I need to.

Gil - Richerby. The simplest way to program my suggestion is as follows. Assume A plays B. A takes 10 days of vacation 10 days are added to A's clock and the clock of each opponent including B's clock. A move later B takes 10 days vacation. 10 days are added to B's clock in every game. Each of B's opponents including A gets 10 days added to their clock. What was originally 10d/all has become 30d/all. However both players extended the game and they are still on equal footing.

Sakhan - We agree that if it is not excluded by the rules than it is fair play and with in the bounds of sportmanship. I am not sure what you meant by, "and if the referee sees it," in postal chess it is unlikely that one will get caught if one uses Fritz but it is cheating. I dont worry about this in free postal chess becuase what do I care if I am playing Bob, Bob's computer, or some mix of them, I am still playing chess.

I play 10d/all becuase I want to the game to finish within a month. I tend to play positional chess and I play out difficult endgames. A 75 move game at 7d/m could take 3 years. If my opponetnt is 60+ years I could win by by heart attach. I would rather he be forced to finish the game.

I agree with Beco, and I'd support the freezed games while in vacation.

This solves one problem, but creates another. Yes it does eliminate someone using vacation days to purposely help them win a game, but it would also slow down game play for many other games.

If I were going to be on vacation next week, in a hotel where the only internet access was the hotel lobby computer, then I would certainly schedule myself with a vacation. Yet it's possible that once or twice during the week I could sit down and get on that computer and make some moves, thereby keeping my games moving. But I know I'm protected if that one chance I get to sit down and play the computer is already in use.

I personally hate to see my opponents on vacation, as it means the game will sit for a long time, but at least now there is the chance that they will make a move now and then.

If someone is really using vacation days to gain an edge, then they honestly couldn't do it that often before their vacation runs down. I hate to see a helpful rule changed because of a few individuals rarely taking advantage of it on an uncommon game type.

Actually, I don't agree with that. The rules can't possibly cover all situations.

On the other hand, a 75-move game at 10d/all requires, on average, 7.5 moves per day. Unless you and your opponent are both online at the same time, that just isn't going to happen. I've occasionally bashed out ten or eleven moves in the opening when my opponent's online at the same time as me and occasionally three or for in the middlegame. If I were to play 10d/all, somebody would lose on time after between five and fifteen moves.

Everybody has problems... and the game has its rules... as I have said before...

The only way to fix this kind of thing is: when the player is on vacation he is not able to make moves... that's what I think is more fair.

...so, I strongly support myself! :))
