What do you do training chess? Do you just use your computer? Or do use a natural tournament - chess - board with its pieces?
I think a computer is very useful to do the first, may be the second and third step.
But don't miss to use the "natural" board. You cannot memory all those variations you've shown just on a screen when you have to play it on a "natural" board.
The other difference is, you will find several new questions and moves to that variation you are detecting on a board without facing computer's wisdom. This simulates a situation in a tournament. Write down your questions and every idea you've got. Try to find a solution at the board.
Than, second step, use your computer to improve your anwers or to find a (new) solution.
Than go back to your board. The most work has to be made at the "natural" board.
Just give it a try. You will become better memories of your variations, I presume.

If you are that uptight about chess, you have bigger problems than poor memory

A good tip is not to try to calculate all the variations at once, but to look for candidate moves. All the forcing moves, checks captures etc, plus the 'natural moves' that fit in with your plan for the position. Then just go a little way ahead depending on your level of play.

Ignore negative comments from 'the aristocracy'!

Like me you are not GM material. I have no aspirations to become a GM or even an Expert. If you try to just understand the current board, threats etc.. you should do ok. Do not try to memorise openings beyond 8-12 moves as your oponent will deviate before that if not sooner. Just some thoughts.
