That question has been discussed by a lot of us, e.g. see the thread "Bergman to high?" below.

My two guesses:
1) He is an engine, but under development. His programmers take care of the human side of him, but don't make its moves or take its credit. We are its guinea pigs.
2) He is some grandmaster who spends most waking hours playing chess. Queen Alice is where he or she goes to relax. We are this grandmaster's scratching post.

A third possibility would be that he is not a single person, but a group of players. That is not at all likely, given the speed at which he plays.

The thread I already mentioned has some good thoughts about the inflationary effect of ratings in the system used here: we can bark at that remote star if we like, but it will still remain high above us.

I dont think Bergmen uses an engine. If he did he would play better.

That's not what's interesting though. Look at his stats. They're a *lot* different.
