I have Internet Explorer 6.0, about as standard as they get. |
If there's a browser that doesn't have any respect for standards it's IE.. Try using Firefox, I've never heard anyone mentioning "Firefox" and "problem" in the same sentence

I also use IE, and often have problems moving, but I doubt this is browser-specific.
As others have noted, moving actually requires two selections, the piece to move and the target square (not a drag and drop, as might be implied by "letting go of pieces"). Each selection in turn requires that both the press and the release of your mouse button happen in the same square, and that the pointer does not move more than a very few pixels (in which case the pointer turns into a circle/slash icon, to indicate that dragging is not allowed).
To me, usability would be greatly improved if the distance the pointer moved before changing modes was doubled or tripled; most of us do not consciously keep the mouse from moving between press and release of its button; its just too sensitive. Perhaps even better would be to have the mode change only if the pointer actually leaves the square where the button was pressed... Just my two cents

You are right, it's not browser-specific, but OS-specific!
I just migrated my operating system from Windows-XP-Pro to Ubuntu Linux 5.10. I use Firefox as default browser on both OS, but the QA interactive chessboard works a lot better under linux.
Specifically, I no longer experience the "tough letting go of pieces" problem. No perceptible delay whatsoever between mouse clicks.
Here is the browser version I'm using: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20051010 Firefox/1.0.7 (Ubuntu package 1.0.7)
PS. The default version that came with the installer is a bit dated, I'll upgrade to 1.5.0.5 and see what happens.
