The great debate:

1) Some people believe that a player who reaches the level 2200 (rating points) is a chess master.

2) Others hold the opinion that you are not a real chess master unless you play (OTB) and reach a level of 2200.

3) Some believe the only true rating system is F.I.D.E. and you must reach a level of about 2300.

4) There are some people that believe until you reach the level of GM and you are awarded the title of GM by a committee that you have no right to call yourself a master.

5) Whereas others believe if you study a craft for 20 or more years you have the right to call yourself a master in that field.

I think because of the Internet, someone might have to re-visit this issue one day and maybe create a new class, dedicated to establishing the Internet chess GM, IM and master.

Nice too. Let me explain. The Master is the Boss so the King is the master in chess because once the King is dead the game is finished. You are attacking the King. So the King is the Master. :-D :-D :-D

There is also other status in this. Players who has not much ELO rating minus 2200 or minus 2300 have won some kind of tournaments and for that they are called masters..not FM,IM or GM,just masters. more than once champion of Reykjavík has been rather low rated player.
Also is masters of chess clubs in citys and towns and so on..in this I am talking about over the board play..INTERNET chess is different and for instance in QA we can perhaps call master here who win Elite tournament... ;-)

The word `master' is used in several contexts.

In informal usage, a `master' is any extremely strong player. For example, when people suggest studying master games as a means of improving one's chess, they mean to look at the games of people like Capablanca, Alekhine, Botvinnik, and so on, as well as second-tier players like Nimzowitsch.

Formally, the term `Master' is used by the USCF to denote a player with a USCF rating in the range 2200-2399. (2400 and over is a Senior Master, 2000-2199 is Expert.) Other federations may award similar titles.

FIDE awards the titles FIDE Master (FM), International Master (IM) and Grandmaster (GM) (and equivalent titles for women) but it is unusual to use the vague term `master' if one of these is meant.
