Depends what you mean by `computer aid'. While playing the game (which is the context we're in), I agree that it's best to make your own mistakes. But once the game is over, a great way to improve is to analyze your play, try to work out what your mistakes were and then check your analysis with the computer ot see if you missed any tactical opportunities.

I believe members are free to use databases in QA, but i rather like to play and try out on my own :-P

I learn better when I prepare first before a game by consulting a database, start a game without that help (after a few days usually, to avoid "spoonfeeding" myself), then compare to the database (and a good game engine) what happened after the game has finished.
