No! It encourages the abusive behaviour by saying `You can't start another tournament until you resign a few more games. Why not resign the ones you have least chance of winning?'

One user out of 1,737 abuses the site and then disappears. The same effect could have been achieved by warning the user and cancelling his account if he failed to modify his behaviour. There was absolutely no need for a change in the rules.

Interestingly, right now the 50 game rule is encouraging me to be a bit 'unsporting'.

Ordinarily, I don't like claiming a game on time unless it's waaay overdue and it's, say, holding back a competition from progressing. Otherwise, maybe the person had PC problems, I'm in no hurry ....

but ....

right now I have 6 games 'claimable' on time and 55 games active. So if I wanted to enter a new tournament right now I'd be motivated to claim all those games. Which doesn't sound like an intended effect of the limit ...

If you don't claim them. they will be "canceled"by the system.

Only if he doesn't claim them for a month. And I've a feeling that tournament games will be automatically claimed on time after that period, rather than just cancelled.

Richerby - Has anyone clarified the distortions Gil wrote about? At the risk of being redundant I will. The "prize" in the first round is advancing to the next. If there are 5 groups of 4 in round one and round 2 is also in groups of 4 than some of the second place finishers will advance. If one player resigns without playing then his opponent gets 4 free points. This could be enough to assure that 2 players from that group advance. Had the 2nd place finisher had to play those games he might have scored only 2 or 3 points against the mr. auto-resign. The difference could be enough that a second place finisher from another group advances. Furthermore the overall winner is based on total points from all rounds. If mr auto-resign drew a game against the first place finisher that could cost him first place. Hence the players in the same group as mr. auto-resign have an unfair advantage. That implies that the players in other groups have unfair disadvantage.

Ties are decided by rating. an unscrupulous player could target the tournaments of mr. auto-resign to pad his rating.

I am convinced that Miguel solved a problem. However, I think his solution has created bigger problems.
