Read your post this morning, would have replied sooner but needed to roll my flatmate some cigarettes. Her hands shake so much(a side effect of the medication she is on)that she can no longer roll her own
I successfully gave up smoking about 10 years ago on about the 3rd or 4th attempt.Cold turkey, hypnosis(worked for my father)acupuncture, none of these worked though to be fair the acupuncture was effective initially but I failed to have follow up appointments.
What did work for me was prayer and a faith in a higher power outside of myself.I didn't so much as give up smoking,it was taken from me.
In my efforts to help people give up,I've searched the net.WhyQuit.Com appears to be a good site as is I think, Allen Carr's book Easy Way to Stop Smoking, available from your local library,I expect
" Oh, and the damage generally never goes away - all you can hope for is that it stabilises".The human body has an amazing ability to heal itself upon the cessation of poison intake
Drink lots of water, all the best in your endeavour and you will be well rewarded upon success.

Still looking at reviews on e-ciggies.

Alternatively, the following little device may be sufficient for some smokers. Although I bought one many years ago and considered it useless:

Thanking all for their support so far.

Onceupon,
I smoked for 15 years. Tried every placebo and nicotine replacement option the 'health' industry had to offer. I tried cutting back. I tried hypnosis, all kinds of mumbojumbo. The only thing that will guarentee cessation without relapse is a genuine desire to get off the buggers. Will power, will power, will power. Total cold turkey withdrawal works. It is also so horrible (a constant feeling of gnawing anxiety and irritablilty for 5 days) that you NEVER want to go through it EVER again, and I believe, are less likely to fall off the wagon. the experts also say that you can expect to fail 4-5 times before you finally quit for good.
I's also recommend taking up a physically demanding new hobby like ... ummmm Thai Kickboxing! Punching some pads will help you get out the aggression you will feel during withdrawal and help your body recover from all the damage you've been doing to it.
good luck,
NB

Dear Onceupon.

Every time you try to stop smoking and falter you increase the probability of being successful next time. If you can post pone a cigarete (sorry I cant spell) for 10 minutes you a little closer to you eventual success.

Would it help you to stop smoking if I stopping posting updates on how close I am to 2000 games? %-)
