yes, but.... why not people from USA or Russia?.... India? China? Japan? for example... population there is very high than Brazil...and Russia and India are countries that have tradition of chess.

Your English is fine
Rbivanov makes a good point but without any further information, I'm inclined to believe Clive's statement. An early 'seeding' could have produced such high numbers.
Apparently Brazil was an untapped chess zone so good move on miguel's part.

Acredito que ele seja popular por ser muito mencionado em torneios e outros sites que o promovem. Particularmente, o QueenAlice é um dos melhores sites para essa modalidade de xadrez. Xadrez em tempo-real é o que poderia ser implementado no futuro. ****** I believe that he is popular for being very mentioned in tournaments and other sites that promote it. I thought about this point... India, China and Russia population, heinrich79.
But in Brazil, besides the chess popularity, the Internet is very popular too. Brazilians waste much time at the Internet, principally because in Brazil other services and activities (like cell phone, telephone, theater, movies, cable TV etc) are too expensive.
For example, I use the Internet to talk with my parents, using Skype; I use the Internet to watch my football team's games (the payed TV is expensive too); I talk with my friends using MSN, because SMS and phone calls are expensive in Brazil; I rarely go to the movies or theaters, because in Internet I can have similar entertainment (not the same, of course).
The cell phone in Brazil is only cheaper than South Africa. Here, we have the second most expensive cell phone tax in the world. Telephone prices are abusive too.
So, the big population + the chess popularity + expensive services + the time wasted in Internet by the Brazilians + the quality of Queen Alice to play correspondence chess = Queen Alice's popularity in Brazil.
Well, but the Brazilian case should be further studied .

Good answer. Perhaps those are the reasons.
