Okay, I've flipped to rbivanov's side of the debate too.
Now we'll need some more concrete information on whether miguel actually promoted the site in Brazil in some way.

Well, in my opinion are the 4 items that we can take into account: - In my secondary school and Family was a big incentive to play chess; - Brazilians like technology (phone, skype, msn, "connectivity"); - A rapidly growing country, where broadband Internet is expanding very rapidly; - The population of the country is around 190 people Miho; - It is one of the countries of the world where you spend more time on the Internet.
Well this is my opinion

No. I do not know why the site is so popular among Brazilians. A lot of people assume I'm Brazilian because of that, but I'm not.

Thanks for putting that part of the debate to rest, Miguel. When I first joined, I did speculate that you might have started up the site originally in Brazil. Later when looking at the tournament data, it was obviously not the case.
Almost all of the Brazilian comments have basically agreed so the reasoning seems to be valid. An interesting comparison is the number of Mexican active players which is less than 20!
