Learned it by watching my father and brother playing and also taught myself to read descriptive notation(then the standard notation) and then read 3 chess books from Barnes and Noble. I was 9 years old then. at that time Junior Chess Championship was very popular and I was thinking of joining it as I was beating a lot of adult players in the community. But school intervened and I gotto play chess again in 1972. quit again in 1990 and back again in 2004, all in the internet.

My sister taught me to play. She was 7, I 8, and the neighbors had just taught her. That was in 1968.

I leaned how to play as a teenager from my father - just how to move the pieces. Then I played with a friend for a year back then. I played a few games a year ever since and just recently (30 years later), I realized a whole new world existed in chess - I never knew there was so much information. I thought people just played. Now I study a bit here and there when I get the chance. I was a bad chess player back then and I only improved slightly since.

I learned the basic moves from my elder brother in the late 1960s. By age 10 I was beating up on much older guys in our neighborhood.

The bulk of my learning came from a 30-minute daily TV program called 'Chess Today' in the mid-70s. The show was hosted by Mr. Campomanes (of FIDE fame). He'd invite over local masters to give pointers on the various aspects of the game. My favorite annotator back then was a master named Glenn Bordonada... GM Eugene Torre also showed up as annotator once in a while.

5 minutes before the end of each show, Mr. Campomanes would show a chess puzzle and wait for viewers to phone in their solutions. The first to give the correct solution will be given 2-3 chess books. I was able to amass quite a number of chess books this way, which further helped in my development as a player.
