I learned to play chess when I was a teenager by watching my friends play but I stoped playing the game because of Dancing and when I was appearing Extra in the Philippine Movies in 1960s. I just started playing again after my retirement from work about 5 years ago.

A friend showed me the moves at around 10 or 12. I never played at that time, though. In college, I played and lost 2 games. That was my total experience prior to basic training in the army. I got hooked then, and even moreso when training was finished. I was 23-24 then; 56 now. Still not very good, but very hooked.

I learned at age 12 from a book called "Chess in 30 Minutes" (or something like that) and I still play equally as irresponsibly and carelessly today... :-/

My parents gave me a set, when I was +/- 8...
(Those multiple sets, with chess, checkers and backgammon...)
Altough I learned some "crazy" variation, that you should only promote pawns to previous captured pieces... (And I see that even today many people plays "this style")
After that I began to play for fun with some uncles and cousins...

Wow... Good times... :-)
